Preparation
Park & Prepare
Place your bike on its centre or paddock stand so the rear wheel rotates freely. Engine off, chain at ambient temperature. Lay cardboard under the chain to catch drips.
A clean, well-lubed chain runs quieter, lasts longer, and saves you thousands. Twenty minutes every couple of weeks — that's all it takes.
Follow in order. Skip nothing. The whole routine clocks in at twenty minutes once you've done it twice.
Preparation
Place your bike on its centre or paddock stand so the rear wheel rotates freely. Engine off, chain at ambient temperature. Lay cardboard under the chain to catch drips.
Cleaning — Phase 1
Spray Novus Chain Cleaner along the full chain — top, bottom, both sides. Rotate slowly. Let it dwell 60–90 seconds to dissolve grime and old lubricant.
Cleaning — Phase 2
Using the 3-sided brush, scrub while rotating the wheel. It contacts inner plates, outer plates, and rollers simultaneously. Extra attention near the sprocket teeth.
Rinsing
Wipe the full chain with a dry microfiber cloth while rotating. Inspect for tight spots, stiff links, or roller wear. Links that don't articulate freely may need replacement.
Lubrication
Apply Novus Moto Chain Lube targeting the O-rings on each link — these seals retain the factory grease inside and must stay lubricated to prevent cracking. Rotate slowly and apply in a steady stream along the inner run. A thin, even coat is enough — do not over-apply.
Finishing
Let lube penetrate for 3–5 minutes before riding. Final wipe along outer plates prevents lube fling onto the tyre or swingarm. Check chain tension while you're at it.
Clean, lubed, inspected. Set a reminder at 200–300 km depending on how and where you ride. Consistent maintenance is the only thing standing between your chain and premature wear.
Most modern bikes ship with sealed chains. Knowing what's on your bike means picking the right products.
Chain lifts over half a tooth off a flat sprocket — it's stretched. Watch for rust on outer plates and flattened rollers.
Water displaces lube from link pins. Re-apply after heavy rain, even within the 500 km window.
O-rings seal factory grease inside links. Never use petroleum-based solvents — they degrade rubber permanently.
Worn sprockets accelerate chain wear. Replace chain and sprockets together — always.
